ABOUT THIS PROJECT AND SHOW:

As many in the Edmonton art and sound community have known, I have been working on a “NEW” WIND ROSE sound release for over and year and half.

THE SOUND
The sound and music was recorded shortly after the passing of my Father and is is a reflection of the early phase of my grieving process. I imagined 4 phases of his spirit passing over to the other side… each track is an emotional journey revealed as meditative/pulsed sound. I didn’t hold anything back in the creation of these tracks and they are true to the mandate of my WIND ROSE project which explores layered and pulsed sound and noise using repetition and micro tweaking/layering techniques of only analog oscillators. The instrument used is a wonderfully broken vintage Minimoog and a 70’s analog delay box.

THE ART
I have been a massive admirer of the artwork of SEAN CAULFIELD for many years. I approached him about collaborating on this release and responding to the sound work with one of his amazingly detailed drawings. He offered to do an original Mezzotint with the only stipulation that it would take a long time to create. I didn’t care in the least about the time as I knew the wait would be worth it completely. The art was completed recently and printed by New Leaf in Vancouver in an edition of 100.

We have spent months lovingly hand creating the rest of the packaging and I am thrilled with the end product which will be released by the Edmonton Label Amusements Banales at this show on May 4th, 2014.

THE CONCERT
The show will be presented in the incredible art space of dc3 Art Projects, with a immersive sound space delivered via a fantastic 8.1 Surround PA System. After securing the space and sound system, it only made sense to SHARE all of this with some of my favorite local sound artists. The artists I have selected to play each bring an incredible amount of talent and passion to their work, and will have up to 20 minutes to take us into unique and wonderful (some intense) sound spaces!

I really hope to see you there.

Sincerely,

Gary James Joynes

The Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society has announced it will match some of the city’s most eclectic visual artists with a variety of audio practitioners for an evening to be dubbed ambiARTnight. This event, co-presented with the Harcourt House Artist Run Centre takes place Saturday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Harcourt Annex (10211-112 Street). Admission to the all-ages show is $10. BEAMS members $5.

Works ranging from watercolours and acrylics to mixed media and photography will be projected in crossfade zoom animation, while musicians and audio artists will interpret the images through improvisation. Pairing of visual and audio artists is as follows:

• Mixed media artist Glenys Switzer, whose exhibition credits include the Harcourt Annex, Edmonton City Hall and the McMullen Gallery, will have her work interpreted by guitarist Bill Damur, whose performance background runs the gamut from the ESO to Moebius Flip.
• Communications Guru and acrylics painter Marliss Weber, recently having works put on permanent display at Studio J Urban Spa and the Derrick Club, will have her collection undergo an alternative electronic treatment by electronic artist Bong Sample.
• Photographer, journalist and social activist Paula E. Kirman’s photos will receive a unique sonic treatment by agaperaygunexperiment and Aphotic Numen bassist Shannon Land.
• Emerging watercolours artist Stephen Sereda’s works will be accompanied by Gene Kosowan on an undisclosed processor.

Registered as a not-for-profit organization under the Alberta Societies Act and founded in 1989, the Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society has been dedicated to the production and promotion of sound-oriented experimentation. BEAMS uses the broadest and most inclusive definition of electroacoustic music, welcoming creativity in any medium. Members perform several concerts a year in addition to occasional recordings, festivals and workshops.
