Gary James Joynes has been invited to install 12 Tones, his debut synaesthetic installation piece at the Calgary EPCOR CENTRE’S Arts Learning Centre from September 11-29 where it will be featured as part of Beakerhead Festival, Alberta Culture Days and Doors Open Calgary. To adapt the sound sculptures for this show, Gary has been tinkering and rehearsing in dc3 Art Projects and the entire installation will play within the gallery for one day only – Saturday August 31 from 11-6 – before being dismantled and shipped. Come and experience a 12 channel continuously evolving multisensory composition linking sound and visual stimuli through analog synthesizers, digital photography, custom circuit bending and more than a little magic.
Here is information on the Calgary exhibition including artist’s talk and opening reception September 14.
2013 has been keeping Dive Signals busy already. Right between dropping a new digital single and the debut of collaborative project The Coast, he presents the world with this, what I think is his 20th release, Bedrooms.
Much like last year’s 10,000 Tropics, which I reviewed here awhile ago, the album’s sound draws much from ambient and IDM music. This time, Dive Signals has injected his even-sharper production skills into more long-form jams, creating perhaps his most expansive sonic journey yet. It’s one with warm celestial tones floating over reverb and a light grit of brittle percussion, descending into foggy terrestrial realms. A remarkable release and undoubtedly the first of many more wonderful works of this magnitude we’ll see from him this year.
